Divorce nears as House approves divorce bill on 3rd reading

MANILA — The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved on the third and final reading a bill that will reintroduce absolute divorce in the Philippines.
Edcel Lagman, the principal author of House Bill (HB) 9349 titled "An Act Reinstituting Absolute Divorce," said the measure was approved with a vote of 196-6.
The salient features of the absolute divorce bill have been repeatedly discussed and articulated in various public forums and media interviews.
Under the bill, troubled couples may file a petition for absolute divorce using the following grounds:
- Irreconcilable differences
- Psychological incapacity
- Domestic abuse
- Separation for at least five years
The House of Representatives also approved on final reading the proposed measure on second reading.
